My question involves employment and labor law for the state of: Maryland

After getting permission to take an early vacation for a family matter, my store manager asked me to come in one day and I accepted. Later I find out he was not in the loop, thinking I only wanted time off.
The parent company denied my store a vacation check for me. However, I was generously compensated from the stores petty-cash (this was perhaps in sympathy?) and then I was asked to take an official vacation the following week so they could get a check from the parent company. I did, they got it, and they paid me.
Now they want me to pay back the petty-cash in full by Friday, just a week later (2 days hence).
So . . I'll be out a weeks paycheck and I don't even recall the loan being stipulated as a loan, no less expecting a time to pay it back (not to say I think I should keep it) Anyway, is this not his mistake? Everyone and their mother at work knew I was taking early vacation.. it was a big deal >.>
They were quite strict with me.. sitting me down with HR and having me sign papers. (I had attempted to reimburse them with partial payments and they weren't having it). I think they even recorded the conversation @.@ Probably silly
