My question involves criminal law for the state of: Pennsylvania
I am 21 years old, and about a month ago, I was stopped at Walmart and accused of shoplifting. Here is what happened: I walked in and planned to purchase a soda, pack of gum, and two eyeliner pencils. I went to the self checkout, and having thought all the items had scanned, proceeded to pay and walk out. I was stopped by an LP who checked my receipt and informed me that the two eyeliners, holding a combined value of around $8, had not scanned. I apologized and went to go back to pay, but he took me to the office with all the cameras. He told me that he had a witness who saw me purposely neglect to scan the items and he had me on camera. I told him it was an honest mistake, but he pretty much told me flat out that if I did not agree with him, he would get the police involved. I am applying to grad school in the fall, and cannot afford a criminal record of any kind, so I just stopped talking and waited for him to finish. He took my license and social security number, and told me I could still continue to shop at Walmart. I signed nothing at all. He said since I had no previous record, this would be a warning, and let me go. I came home later and googled the consequences of being accused, and most people online said to expect a civil demand letter. It's been a month and still nothing. Do you think I'll still get one? I do not plan on fighting this, since I have neither the time or the money to spend. I just want to know if it's already been a month, am I in the clear?
BTW, I didn't notice the liners didn't scan because I was completely and utterly exhausted from earlier in the day when my boss mad us go on a required 6 mile hike through the woods, and I tried to scan them two at a time so I could hurry up and get out. I just want this to be over. Also, the liners were opened because I was checking to make sure the colors were what I wanted.
