Unhappy Unregistered, Inoperative Vehicle Towed by the Police from a Public Parking Spot

My question involves a traffic citation from the state of: New Jersey

I purchased an automobile that was not working from an auction in Jersey on monday. It was towed down. My apartment complex would not let me park it in because i did not have parking permit from them. I could not move it to a shop because it was unregistered. I was adviced to park it behind the apartment building which was a street that had parking space. I mailed out the title to have the ownership transferred to my name this morning(tuesday). On getting back from work, my vehicle had been towed. I went to the police and they said i was not allowed to park there. i explained everything to them saying the car was just barely a day old and i was waiting for my title to be placed in my name so i can have it registered. He said i should come back with title in my name, registration and insurance before coming to claim my vehicle. What do i do now?? What are my violation and fine. How do i get out of this.

You get out of it by doing what you were advised: get the title in your name, get valid registration and tags for the vehicle, get insurance on the vehicle, and then pay the towing and storage fees to get the car out of the impound - fees which are going to add up every day that the car is there - so do it QUICKLY.

You've got to either garage the vehicle or otherwise put it in private storage until it's legal. You simply cannot park an unregistered vehicle on public streets. No matter HOW short a time frame. It will be towed under your area's "junked and abandone vehicles" ordinances.

Aardvarc gave you the right answer. Follow it. Fast.

You should have thought this through before going to the auction and had the car delivered to a repair shop or storage facility instead of leaving it on the street.

You also should have hand carried the title to the DMV office for the title transfer and registration. Now, it could take weeks to get it back and I'd had to think what kind of storage charges you are going to get hit with.

This is going to be a very expensive lesson about PPPPPP.

    Let me take a guess?

You mailed the title to a friend in North Carolina in order to have them title and register the vehicle in that state?

You cannot mail a title into a NJDMV because a transfer most be done face to face with proper documentation of the new owner in a NJDMV location.

And you could have moved it to a shop the same way it got to your apartment complex; towing

you have also trailered it to a shop as well.

If you have proof of your purchase and still have the title assigned to you but not yet submitted to the state, you might see of the impound yard will accept that as proof of ownership. If they will, get a two truck or trailer and get your car. The fees will add up quickly as it sets in the impound lot
