My mother misplaced my SS card when I was very young. She applied for a replacement card using my first name, middle initial, my last name and my date of birth which she said was all that was required in the 60's. She was issued a replacement card with a number that she thought was my correct number that I used until I discovered in 1990 that I my identity had possibly been stolen. This came about when I applied for a credit card in a clothing store and was denied. I checked my credit and found credit accounts and car loans from Florida that were not mine. I lived in Maryland and had never been to Florida. I contacted the fraud department of police in the city the transactions took place and after talking to them found that for 26 years I had been using the wrong SSN. The other me had the same first and last name and birthday and middle initial, but his middle name was Leon and mine Lister. I went to the SS office and after finally convincing them they confiscated my card (I have a copy) and gave me a new number and transfered my work and wage history. The other guy never worked. Now 24 years later, I subscribed to a credit and identity theft outfit and have discovered that not only has all of his bad credit followed me, but a criminal history that is about a mile long including theft, thuggery, drug possession, drug sales, etc..... I called my mom and guess what...she found my original card (A third number) and says I should use that one now. I'm going to go to the local SS office, but from what I have read I am not too sure what I need to do to get rid of his massive credit abyss on my credit history or his extensive criminal record that may make me lose my job. Is it possible to get a new Social Security identity and wipe him out of my background completely? Do you have any suggestions? Name change has been suggested as well.
v/r,
Guy with 3 SSN's
