Default Collection of Past Due Rent on a Skip

My question involves an eviction in the state of: MD

Resident vacated his apartment before the lease expiration. This month's rent is currently 16 days past due.

My intent was to file for an eviction, however I don't feel a need to do so, since the resident turned over keys, and no longer resides in the apartment.

I have contacted the resident several times regarding the rent, and he is refusing to pay. He says he will pay when he wants. Should I turn his account over to collections?

    Thank you

Can't imagine why you would need strangers on the internet to answer that question since it's 100% up to you.
