Default Why Didn't the Store Stop a Shoplifter From Leaving

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Minnesota

I went to Kohl's the other day with my friend, and she ended up shoplifting (which I had no idea about). We went to the beauty section first, and she put several items in the cart. We wandered around a bit looking at random stuff. We then went to the women's section. I grabbed a few items to try on, and she grabbed a few too. We both went in, and when we came out, I noticed that the beauty stuff was gone. I thought she had changed her mind and just put them in the stall. Then we walked around some more before we went up to the register so I could pay for something. While we were up there, a lady at the customer service desk said a code over the speaker, and it startled me so I looked up and she was looking right at me. I paid with a debit card, then we left. Nobody came out and nobody said anything to us. We got home, and she pulled out the nail polishes and a few pairs of socks. I'm so scared now that the lady at the desk somehow thought I stole something or was in on it or that they have a picture of my license plate. I'm losing sleep over this. Why didn't the LP stop her or even the lady at the desk if they suspected anything? We were there long enough for them to be able to stop us. Is the police gonna show up at my door and falsely accuse me or can they track me with my debit card? I'm scared to even go back to the store even though I didn't do anything.

paranoia is a bitch, isn't it.

Chances are you got away with the stuff but no way to know for sure so all you can do is wait.

You will NOT be falsely accused. You were an accessory to the crime which makes you as guilty as she was.

I'd recommend staying out of that Kohls for a why and if the police do start knocking on the door, refuse to speak with them unless you have an attorney present.

How is the OP an accessory when the OP knew nothing about the crime before the crime occurred?

You say s/he didn't know. She said it too.

    want to guess how many people say;

I didn't know anything about what they were doing

but when video tapes are revealed, it becomes quite obvious they were acting as a look out or actually picked up a few things themselves?

this right here is a clue to the state of mind of the OP that shows they were quite aware the friend did intend on shoplifting:

Then we walked around some more before we went up to the register so I could pay for something. While we were up there, a lady at the customer service desk said a code over the speaker, and it startled me so I looked up and she was looking right at me.
if OP actually thought friend had put the stuff back, why did they feel so guilty? Remember, op claims they had no idea friend was stealing yet here they are being quite paranoid about innocent actions the store took. Remember, OP claims to not know friend stole anything until they got home yet here she is, believing the "code" called and the "look" somehow indicated the store was aware of the theft.

I'm talking about when I thought back on it. When I loom back and remember, I remember a code being called and since it was so loud, it startled me so I looked up and she was looking at me. You know there are people who actually are honest about what they post online.

Sure, and they tell the same story to the cops.

Like the cops, we hear it so often, we are immediately skeptical.

Well then its a good thing that its not up to you to decide that. If they look at camera footage they will see I had no part of it. I didn't put this question on here for everyone to question whether or not I was part of it. I asked this question to see if they would find out later.

So? When you put your legal business out on a publicly accessible forum, staffed by volunteers, you take the responses you get. We don't offer any guarantees that you will like the answers, and we don't offer any guarantees that people won't draw conclusions you don't like. Don't like it? Go pay a professional.

I asked this question to see if they would find out later.
You were party to the situation, and you don't know. So what makes you think that strangers on the internet can make an accurate prediction? You already got good advice - stay out of the Kohl's, and if the cops show up at your door, don't answer.

I would also add the suggestion that you obtain a better class of friend.
