Default Paying Medical Bills After Overstaying a Visa

This is in regards to a CA "resident" that has overstayed the visa. The individual has recently been hospitalized for "headaches" and probably found evidence of substance use in the blood. No valid ID, and even the passport is lost.

What can be done to pay cash for the hospital bill and be discharged? Could the hospital proceed with deportation process? Will law enforcement be involved?

Possibly yes. I suggest someone pony up cash to the billing department before they are released.

The hospital doesn't care whether he is a citizen, a legal resident or an illegal resident. They just want their money.

You can check to see if the hospital's billing office will accept cash.

My wife is a legal resident and has health insurance through my employer.

Are there even any hospitals that DON'T take cash? That's weird.

Money is not an issue (assuming the bill for 1 overnight isn't outrageous--the patient has yet to find out what the bill is). I just wanted to get some info to avoid jeopardizing situations for whoever goes to pick up the patient, and to avoid trouble for the patient as well.

The hospital will not care about the lack of identity?

Thanks for the input, guys (gals?).

Nope, not in the ER. They'll give the patient the care s/he needs regardless of immigrant status or lack of ID.

Please clarify for me, because this just might be critical: your answer didn't really tell me whether or not it was your wife or someone else. If it's not your wife, I'm not sure why you're concerned to begin with.

It's difficult to believe that the hospital doesn't have a name associated with your wife's medical chart. You're playing some games here. I suggest discussing the full facts with a lawyer.

He is playing games. He admitted that on the forum down the street.
