If you believe you received inaccurate information at the university, you should have spoken directly to the DSO to report it once you returned. Most international advisers and staff members are very protective of their charges as well as the university. If someone was giving out incorrect information, they would want that addressed immediately.
I did, as soon as I got back, and they did address it, actually.

Thank you for your answer. So you are saying that having an I193 does not automatically disqualify a visa renewal ? That was my question, since I know, of course, that no one can guaranty the outcome of a visa interview.
