Exclamation Speeding Ticket with No Radar Gun

My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Pennsylvania

I was given a ticket that said I was going 71 in a 55 zone. The officer was driving in front of me and said that I kept an equal distance from him for a while so my speed must have matched his. Therefore, he was not using a radar device to clock me. I was given a ticket for $170 (150 for the ticket, 10 for EMS, and 10 for something else?) and no points on my license. It was my first ticket ever. Also, as I was driving I noticed 4 other cars pulled over on the opposite side of the road. MUST HAVE BEEN QUOTA DAY considering it was the end of the month. I know that I was going over the speed limit as many others were, but I feel like I could have been wrongly "clocked" and ticketed way too much money

so, how fast were you going?

It is extremely difficult to dispute a paced ticket. As long as the speedometer in the police car is certified, if required, and the cop testifies that he maintained a consistent distance from your vehicle, even for a very short period of time, there is really no defense available.

Your feelings and $2 will get you a cup of coffee.

    Do you have a question?

Pennsylvania is bizarre in only the State Police is allowed radar. Pacing is as good a method as any. Most departments use a glorified stopwatch over a measured course (typically Robic). I doubt it was "quota" day but just a targeted area enforcement. Likely they had accidents there or complaints.

The difference between a 65 in a 55 and a 71 in a 55 is only 12 bucks. Most of your ticket is court costs and all the goofy surcharges (I've never understood why a traffic ticket yields a contribution to the victims of crime compensation fund).

You don't have a compelling defense anyhow but you can try arguing for a reduction in the fine. If they did use robic you can try challenging the time over distance though unless there's a glaring error (as if they entered the wrong distance in the calculation), that likely won't result in anything. Frankly a lot of departments use way statistically two short distances (given the precision of the distance field in the robic stopwatch itself).
