My question involves insurance law for the state of: California.

Hi. I've read the forums and some other sites and unfortunately didn't quite understand how I should proceed.
I just got my first driver license in CA, I have no car and no car insurance.
When I try to buy insurance online they always ask me for specific car so I cannot buy before I have one... but to buy I need to test drive.

Suppose I will be test-driving 3-10 vehicles (priced in 8-12k range) from dealerships and private parties over 1-3 weeks.
I want to have complete peace of mind during a test drive, esp. w.r.t. liability, because car damages at least are limited to its price... I don't want to end up owing $100k for scratching someone's Ferrari or a knee surgery if something bad happens and dealer/seller has bad insurance.
If I have to pay $100 for it so be it...
Which insurance product should I buy? What do people w/o insurance like that normally do, just wing it? I don't suppose I'm the first.

Thank you.
