    Default Close deceased father's account

My father passed away in November 2004 without a will. I have been trying to close his checking account since. I provided a death certificate to the bank. However, since he didn't have any beneficiaries I am unable to access his account. The account was opened in South Florida and he passed away in Los Angeles, CA. How can I access his account? I was told I have to provide documentation as an administrator to his estate. How do I do that?

open probate in the county of his residence and apply as administrator.

Some states have "small estate" filings if there is very little to actually direct through probate. If so, it is generally quite simple.
Call the probate court in the county of you dads last residence and ask.

Unless the assets in the account are enough to warrant the trouble, I'd simply forget about it.
