Default Consequences for a High School Student Caught Shoplifting

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Indiana

I am a 16 year old girl, and yesterday I got caught stealing two items from JCpenney. A dress, and a shirt. together adding up to be $90. I did not even look at the price tag to know it was that much money. I went into the dressing room with my friend, placed the items in my bag, and left the store. Shortly returning as the Jcpenney security asked us if we had anything in our bags. Being the first time we have ever done this we confess and cooperate every step of the way asking how much we owe and what we can do. We both had to have our parents come get us, and have a court date. What can I be charged with? I am a varsity cheerleader, in several clubs, have a job, and am on the honor roll..

    please help

You need to talk to your parents about it.

Have you been issued a court summons? Were police involved?

If you have to go to court, don't even bring up you are on the honor roll because that shows you really knew better.

Your job....if you are in retail, just pray your employer doesn't find out.

You do not get a pass or any kind of credit for being varsity cheerleader, or for being in several clubs, or for being on the honor roll, or for having a job. I would not recommend bringing any of these issues up in court.

My parents know as much as I do. I do not have a court date yet but they said it would be sent in the mail. The police had to be there to witness us walking out with our parents but other than that, no police were involved. I work in food thank god

Since the police were there, that means you were likely technically arrested and released to your parents.

you work in food....um...if your employer finds out you have been arrested, you won't be anywhere near the cash register. Expect the mop and bucket and fry vats.
