Caught Stealing from Walmart With a Friend

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
I am 21 years old and yesterday my friend and I got caught stealing multiple items from Walmart (total of about $200), they got our information down signed a paper and told us that we will receive a letter in the mail within 2 weeks. They did not call the cops and told us that we will have to go to court. and the court will decide whether to do community service and or probation.
What should we expect in court? Will this stay in my record? I can't afford a lawer and I do not have a job to pay the fees. What can I do?

You should consult with a local attorney. If you are indigent and can't afford rather than being unwilling to pay for an attorney, ask for a public defender at your arraignment.

Some courts offer diversions to first time shoplifters.

Your friend and you got caught stealing together? You both need lawyers, if you can afford them. If not, as Ron said, ask for a Public Defender.

You are looking at court costs and fines, the store will be sending a Civil Demand letter for money to both of you. Other things that may happen is probation, community service, anti-shoplifting program.

Yes, this will be on your record for many years. In fact, that is reason why you want a lawyer/public defender - you want to ask about Diversion/First Time Offender programs. That will mean after a probationary period that your record is sealed.

Your names may be in the National Retail Theft Database for the next 7 years which means good luck finding a job in Retail.
