I used to live in Utah for college. I was on my parents medical insurance. In May of 2000, I saw a foot doctor because I run a lot and my foot was hurting. I paid the copay and went on my way. Soooo, 5 years passes, then a few days ago, I get a letter from "AAA Collections Professionals", saying that I hadn't been responding to previous letters, and if I didn't respond to this one, I'd get a bad report for the 500 dollar unpaid medical bill. (500 bucks for a doc to tell me not to run so much? That's a whole different issue..I now live in Las Vegas, and I haven't lived in Utah for 3 years. I am listed in the phonebook and online, there is no reason why they shouldn't have been able to contact me years ago. Certainly 5 years is too long not to let me know that the claim wasn't paid. So anyway, it's being resubmitted to the insurance to pay. Here are my questions:
1. If the insurance refuses, what is the statute of limitations on medical bill collections in Utah?
2. What do I do if this company puts a bad report on my credit?
3. Any chance I'll end up having to pay this just for the sake of my credit?
Any advice is veeery appreciated!!! Thanks!
