Default Driving After Failing to Renew Expired Tabs

My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: WA

I got a ticket for expired tabs on Sat, then again on Sunday. My vehicle had been sitting for several months until now that I've moved back for a few weeks. Since I wasn't driving the car (I can show the judge mileage from when I left from an oil change slip to the current mileage), I didn't think I had to renew. I just left the car at home and they would periodically start it but it was parked on our private property. Naturally, when I came back, this wasn't the first thing on my mind and until I got the ticket (2 days into driving), I didn't even realize my tabs were expired.

Anyways, my question is if I can have this infraction changed from a traffic infraction to a non-moving violation - is this a possibility and how would I do that? Do insurance companies even care about this type of violation? I'll be going in to renew the tabs on Monday - is there something comparable in the RCW for how when you renew your insurance after a ticket, there's some leniency on the cost of the ticket?

An expired registration violation is not a moving violation. There is nothing you need to do, it is already done.

I doubt that it would affect your insurance rates…but, only your insurance agent can tell you for sure.

There is no statutory leniency for renewing your insurance AFTER a ticket, either. If you had valid insurance at the time you were cited, but just did not have the proof of insurance with you, then the violation is dismissed and you just have to pay court costs. But, renewing AFTER being cited (either insurance or registration) does nothing to mitigate the initial violation. Some judges MAY chose to impose a reduced penalty, but it is entirely at their discretion. Having your renewal paperwork in hand at the time of your hearing will certainly be viewed as a sign of good faith. But, all you can do is ask for a reduced penalty.
