Petty Theft Misdemeanor for Shoplifting, PC 484(A), First Offense

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

I'm 28, got caught stealing, about 70$ worth, this is my first offense. They detained me in the loss prevention room, a cop came and just asked me some questions, then gave me a yellow carbon paper that says "notice to appear". I have a court date in 2 months.
What are the likely consequences?
I really really want to avoid any jail time.
I can't afford an attorney, can I contact a public defender ASAP so they can help me out right now? Or do I need to wait till my court date is closer?
I really have NO idea how any of this works. Please advise. I'm terrified.

The LIKELY results will be probation, fines, and maybe a couple of days jail time if any. You COULD spend up to 6 months in jail and pay fines up to $1,000 (with assessments and the like tacked on, it can be double that).

Your county might have a deferral program for first offender shoplifters, but most counties do not yet have such a program.

If you cannot afford an attorney, one can be appointed for you at or before your arraignment (when depends on the county and the process they use). Keep in mind that you may also receive a civil demand from the business asking you to pay $50-$500 in addition to whatever you might have to pay as a result of a criminal conviction.
