Default Medi-Cal Eligibility with Coverdell Savings

I know this is an old thread but have a question about applying for Medi-Cal for a disabled child (under 10).

The child's parents opened a Coverdell account in his name at birth (well before it became obvious that had a disability). It is currently worth about $4500 (stocks). The child has nothing else in his own name. Would the money in this account (that can only be used for educational purposes) make him ineligible for disability based Medi-Cal ? I am assuming that spending this money on his therapeutic needs would be considered suspicious / fraud, especially if the parents applied, and he became eligible, for Medi-Cal, after it was all gone ?

    Any advise ?

That's what the new thread button is for. There was no need to necropost to this one.
