My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan
Age: 21
No criminal record
My friend and I were caught shoplifting at Walmart the other day. They had taken the prices of all the items and split them equally between us. I know that the total amount was under $100 dollars so we were each charged with under a $50 dollar amount. They had taken all of our information (picture, current address, name, birthday, etc.) They had told us that the cops needed to be called because our limit was over a specific amount, but when the cops were called they were told that they would not be able to arrive for a couple of hours. The workers then told us that someone was watching over us and they let us leave. They gave us a sheet of paper of a number that we need to call and that we will be receiving something in the mail. They ALSO told us that we should call the police and tell them our situation and ask them what is our next step to get it taken care of, but not to call them until a week after the incident. The whole situation left me extremely confused so I talked to a lawyer and he called the store and he told me it seemed like we were not going to get charged from Walmart. I am still confused, however, about the police not showing up. Am I going to have the cops show up at my apartment at any point? Will I be getting something in the mail from the cops instead? Will I be going to court?
