Default Can I Sue a Receptionist Who Told My Employer I Behaved Inappropriately

My question involves defamation in the state of: Illinois

I called up a temporary agency today in order to tell them I was available for work. I applied there last month. While talking to an individual on the telephone, I'm told that I'm ineligible for work due to a receptionist's allegations that I displayed inappropriate behavior, for what I recall. The inappropriate behavior was not discussed, and I was not told about anything. I was completely new to the place when I went there in January of 2014 to register my information with the temporary agency. For what I recall, I had asked about a form and why various aspects were being requested of me: Strictly business. As such, I responded with the belief to the individual who told me about the receptionist that the receptionist had slandered me. Today was the first day I had heard about this issue. I have not seen any emails in relation to it. There was no inquiry as to my culpability. No one asked me if I held the intent to harass. It appears someone made up bullshit about me. Furthermore, as I'm a neuroscientist, I could just as well argue that I understand and am able to analyze states of mind (call myself an expert), say that the receptionist held the intent to defame, and bring the issue to court.

Was I slandered? I believe so.

Yeah. You're not going to win a defamation suit.

There is no recourse - legally speaking.

And before you turn it into 6 pages of nonsense, please allow me to stated the obvious.

What they should do is irrelevant.
What they did do isn't illegal.
You will not win a defamation case.

    End of story.

(See? that was brilliantly efficient of me!)

How is what they did not illegal? It's easy enough to say that I was put in a false light if not defamed.

No, it wasn't illegal. They are not required to provide work to anyone, and can discriminate in any way that they like unless you are a member of a protected class and they discriminate for a reason the particular class is protected from.

Now, have you considered that this may be an honest mix up? That you have been confused with someone else?

Show us the law that says they're required to hire you.

I'm not saying that they're required to hire me. I'm saying that a receptionist cost me a potential monetary opportunity and degraded my reputation. If not defamation, then I consider it to be false light.

I've not considered prior to your question that it could have been an honest mix up. Today is the first day I've heard of it, and I'm further looking into it.

You seriously need to do some homework. Chase down the defamation threads and read 'em. You'll understand once you've done that.

Of course, it would be helpful if you perhaps didn't gloss over the question of why someone would feel the need to say that. What DID happen? (as opposed to what didn't)

Could you please expand on this? Specifically your area of expertise, your previous research into states of mind, and the specific analysis you were able to perform to show the receptionist had the intent to defame.

A neuroscientist who is studying law and sociology, who has had numerous restraining orders filed against him, who still lives at home with his parents and who can't even get temp work?

Please folks stop feeding the troll!
