My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: New York

Today I received a ticket for using the gps my phone to look up where I was going. I have a hands-free device but the phone was in my lap while I got caught. In the supporting deposition the officer recorded my statement as "I was setting my gps, I am trying to find a storage unit. I do know that I am not to use my mobile phone while driving."

My reason for posting is I am wondering what the best way is and the procedure for getting the ticket reduced. Basically, what can I expect to happen at the court date and what is the best course of action.. I understand that on my court date I will show up and be in front of the judge. Should I plead not guilty? Or ask to speak with the prosecutor or the assistant district attorney? I'm not sure what the best way to go about it is and am really hoping to get it reduced as I just graduated college, am basically broke, and the fines plus 5 points associated with the charge are really going to hurt.
