Officer Claimed I Was Not Wearing My Seatbelt

This happened a few years ago when I was pulled over for speeding. Once I pulled over, I put my car in park, turned off the ignition, and unbuckled my seatbelt to reach over to the glove compartment to get the insurance & registration. The officer ticketed me for not wearing my seatbelt. I'm just wondering, how can someone protect themselves from something like this? People have told me that you should leave your seatbelt on at all times when pulled over a police officer but with larger vehicles you have to unbuckle your seat to reach over to the glove compartment unless you intend to strangle yourself!!! This happened in Michigan.

Wait until the police officer comes over, then ask for permission to retrieve the information from your glove compartment, keeping your seat belt on until that time.
