While you can feign ignorance on the parts that apply to the interstate rules (DOT licenses, etc...), the base CDL rules (including the medical card) apply to within California as well. In fact, California exceeds the Federal requirements for CDL drivers. The rules for the CDL, medical, and things like extinguishers and triangles are so pathetically basic, nobody is going to believe you didn't know you needed these things. I won't even move a U-Haul vehicle for my personal use without the latter.

I don't understand why he thinks you needed a CDL, ect. you wasn't pulling a trailer.

    From CDL licensing:

Single Vehicles - Having a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR)* of 26,001 pounds or more.

Combination Vehicles - Towing a trailer or other vehicles with a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more when the gross combination weight rating (GCWR)** is 26,001 pounds or more.

Because you need a CDL when he "wasn't [SIC] pulling a trailer."

He said his truck had an empty weight of 10,000, I can almost guess that the truck had enough gross (that's the maximum it CAN carry not how much it was carrying). Of course, if he was mistaken and it really has a GVWR of only 10K, then you're right he may not have needed a CDR. However, we can only go on what he says, we're not clairvoyant.

The 10,700 number I mentioned is the dry weight of the truck. The GVWR is 20k lbs.

Well now I'm confused about operating in California. Driving a vehicle for commerce doesn't necessarily mean you have to get a commercial license right? The weight and number of axles fall under the regular class C license.

As for the medical card, in looking over requirements I found I have a condition that probably disqualifies me from passing. I'd rather not resort to lying but it shouldn't matter if I am only going to be working inside CA in the future, right?

The biggest question I have is how best to proceed with Nevada?
