My question involves juvenile law in the State of: New York
First off I'd like to say that I seriously regret what I did and I'd never do it again.
When I was 14 (I'm 16 now) I was caught shoplifting. They said that since it was my first offense and I was a minor it wouldn't go on my record, and they didn't attempt to try me court or anything, just mailed my dad a fine and told me not to come back into the store for 7 years.
However, my parents seem skeptical about the whole "not going on my record" thing, so I'm just wondering, what are the chances it is going to show up on my background check? Because that would seriously affect my college process next year.
Also, my dad never received the fine (perhaps it was mis-sent), but the store didn't pursue any other course of action, like turn me over to court.
