My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Wisconsin

Hello,

Was driving on the interstate when I got to a place where the freeway diverges into two freeways. The exit has three lanes, and since you are exiting to a new freeway there is no requirement to slow down to exit, it just splits off to the right. I took the exit from the center lane (perfectly legal) and went off to the left lane of the exit to the right. Just as I exit there are several emergency vehicles in the left lane attending to a disabled vehicle. I had a car to my right, so I could not immediately get over, and was traveling at 60 mph (not speeding). I slowed down and gradually merged to my right when the lane was clear. I did not swerve to get out of the left lane, nor did I want to slow down too much since I was entering an interstate. I have my wife and two small kids in the car for Pete's sake. I did not get overly close to any of the parked vehicles in my opinion, and did the first police officer was in their vehicle, not walking around. I merged with approximately 200-300 feet to spare.

Next thing you know the first emergency vehicle is in my rearview with the lights on. I honestly thought it was leaving the scene, as I did not even think anything of what I did or that I did anything wrong. I knew I wasn't speeding. The officer said I was coming up so close in her rearview that she feared for her safety and had to "leave her post". This I find ludicrous as the car did not pull out in front of me (as if to leave their post) but pulled out behind me after I had cleared. I got a ticket for $330 and still don't know what I did wrong.

Have never fought a ticket in court before but this one really gets me. What is the best approach here? Would I have to pay even more if I am found guilty?
