My question involves criminal law for the state of: Missouri
I was arrested for shoplifting at Walmart for an amount of about $40. I was arraigned yesterday, and the judge gave me until January 28 to consult a lawyer. I asked him about consulting a court appointed attorney or public defender, and he said the court would not provide me with one. I don't understand why not, but my questions are these: Is it possible to speak with a public defender about my case and how do I do it? If not, what's the best way to go about finding an attorney? I have no income, and am currently living with a disabled, bed ridden relative as her "caretaker," living off her disability. Is there any options for free or low cost criminal defense attorneys? (Most of my research into pro bono attorneys suggests they primarily work in civil matters.) Answers to these questions, or advise on my case in general, would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
