Unhappy Paying Off a Repossessed Car

Hi, I am trying to look up some information on what to do about my faince's situation. My fiance has terrible credit which we are currently trying to pay off. 6 months ago a car company called him about a car that he purchased in 1999 (sept) and said that he needed to make payments on it until jan and then he could pay it off with his tax check, a settlement of 1300 dollars. We have been making payments to this place now for five months, never late, and we got a call yesterday from a lady telling us that he had one week to get 1500 dollars to make a down payment then we would have to at least double our payments and that would lock it in for a settlement of 4000.00. We don't have this kind of money. He explained the situation to her and she said that the man he talked to doesnt work there anymore and left no information on any payment plan, though she could see where we had been making monthly payments of the same amount before the 28th of the month. She told us that we needed to ask his parents for money and that made me really mad because we were leaving his grandfathers funeral at the time. She kept telling us places where we could get money. I am wondering what we can do about it. He had not made a payment since 2000 on it and they just popped up one day saying that he owes 9800.00 on a car that was repossessed. Can they really take him to court if they have been taking and cashing the checks that we are sending. She says that she will not go lower than 4000. Can someone please let me know what can be done about this?

    Who has the car now?

    What was the original price?

What were the original monthly payments?

How far behind did he get?

(By the way, I hope you have a really good job because you will need it! )

Okay, he made one payment of $400, is that correct?

Then he owes them a lot of money.
