Question Should I Report Credit Card Fraud to the Police

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York
My bank recently notified me that three large charges were posted to my account(I have alerts set up). They were charges for car rentals. I have possession of my card and did not authorize these charges. I suspect someone from a scammy dumpster company I hired used my credit card info to make these charges. My bank canceled my card and will be issuing a new number. They said I would not be responsible for the charges. My question is: Should I file a police report? Is it necessary?

yes, at least attempt to make the report. It may be needed somewhere down the line to show your true belief the charges were fraudulent. The worst that will happen is the cops go; sorry, we don't take reports for that.
