Default Large Bill for Testing that My Doctor Thought Wouldn't be Expensive

So, I need a type of medication that is abused by some. My doctor makes everyone take a drug test for certain medications. knowing that I don't have good insurance through work I asked him how much does this cost? he said he doesn't have the cost since he submits them to a lab but told me it won't be that expensive.

I got the bill from this lab he submitted it to $931. they break it down to where it's like $200 for this drug $100 for that drug etc etc. I feel scammed. any non medical company would be under harsh investigation for these types of practices. why are doctors getting away with it?

I attempted to settling it but they aren't budging much at all they want to break it into payments. i can't afford or justify $931 for a urine drug test!! I'm an hourly employee do you know how many hours I have to work to pay this off?! what should I do about this? is this something like this unheard of?

Why did you believe him when he told you it wouldn't cost much when in practically the same breath he said he had no idea how much it cost? Why didn't you find out for yourself what it cost before agreeing to the test?

Given your description of the test, it sounds like the doctor won't prescribe the specific medication unless you agree to be tested for the use of controlled substances. The price you describe seems high, unless the doctor was ordering tests for specific medications that aren't part of a standard drug screen.

Have you tried contacting the lab to determine if you can get the charge reduced, if you can work out a payment plan, or both?

Why did I believe him? I don't know. I thought doctors were more trustable. Is there a limit on how much they can charge for something like that I mean. since by allowing them to do this drug test without give me a price first it seems like I gave them a blank check, I mean couldn't they essentially have charged me $9,000 and said, well that's the charge. I know that's way on the high end but you get my point.

Well he did say he had no idea...and that turned out to be true. I don't think you have any case against the doctor.

And our point is that you DID give them a blank check by not verifying the cost before taking the test.

Also seems like it time to find another doctor that won't require that test.

when a guy living in a cardboard box says; it won't be that expensive, I would think less than a buck.

if Bill Gates says; it won't be that expensive; I'm thinking I will never earn enough in my life to be able to afford it

In either statement, there is acknowledgment that it will be expensive. It is clarified simply as just not being "that" expensive.

    Everything is relative.

Next time ask the doctor for the exact test to be performed, and then ask him if you can shop around for a lab that can/will do it more economically. Prices do vary quite significantly between labs.
