Default How to Legally Distribute Movies Online

Hello I would like to touch further on the topic discussed earlier here under this thread:

    http://www.expertlaw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159736

The topic provider suggested that he owned DVDs that he intern wanted to sell online. His idea was basically trashed and deemed ludicrous and nonsensical .

My question is would the same logic pertain to the streaming of films online as a means of distribution?

Because I see at least 100 sites thats are doing it other than Netflix, and I would assume that they are A. illegal and B. not going away and as a matter of fact seem to be increasing in number as I type. So is this also a "Unrealistic Dream" as one commentator put it or an obvious dirty secret that the slow moving Hollywood pay no attention to the man behind the curtain like the music industry did, just doesn't want to talk about?

    Not to sound cynical

he didn't want to sell the dvd's online. He wanted to sell digital copies of the dvd's he owned. There is a HUGE difference.

    yep

unless you know some site is acting illegally, assuming it is and using them as a model is a foolish move. but hey, it's not my money and my freedom that is at risk.

Conclude these sites are paying royalties each time the movie is viewed.

So wouldn't it technically be just as obvious as opening up a Mom & Pop video rental store? and im sure Mom & Pop didnt need to shell out millions of dollars to open their now defunct obsolete video rental. Im sure as time goes on and the long tail becomes standard Hollywood will be paying streaming sites to premiere their movies. In a forward thinking kind of way.

Millions? no. But they obtained the videos/rights though legal channels and no I doubt very much that the studios will pay to have someone stream their videos for free. The things have to be paid for somehow. Even on the secondary distribution market (i.e., after it is in theaters) they enjoy a healthy royalty stream from the streamers.

Anyhow, that's all neither here nor there. You can't put up other people's content on the net without license, that's an illegal copy. You also can not make public performance without securing the rights even if you had the rights to the copy.
