My question involves real estate located in the State of: NC When my mother died in 04, she left her house (House211) to me alone. She also owned several other properties, one of which was my grandmother's house (House318). House318 was jointly inherited by my niece (Tara) and me. A few years ago, Tara and I decided to sell House318. The sale proceeded and was finalized. After the new owner (I'll refer to her as Jill) moved in, she received property tax bill but noticed that the property in her name was NOT House 318 BUT House211.
Our attorneys immediately attempted to correct the error so that House318 was deeded to Jill and House211 was mine again. Jill's issue was resolved -- her name was added to the deed to House318.

Now the fun part: House211 was now deeded to Tara and me, instead of just me!!. I can only guess that when our attorneys were attempting to correct the mistake, someone assumed that the names on the deeds simply needed to be traded. What failed to be noticed though was that while Tara's name (and mine) were originally listed on the deed to House318, her name was NEVER on the deed to House211. Essentially, because someone working for the closing attorney screwed up, my niece now owns half of my house!

I've attempted to contact the attorneys but I haven't received a reply. I need Tara's name to be removed from the deed to my house asap. Since it was the law firm's mistake, I don't think I should have to correct it. It is not as simple as asking my niece to sign the house back over to me because my she is unreliable, dishonest, and has addiction issues.

Imo, the closing firm should correct the error because it was their screwup. Normally I would contact an attorney but I'm struggling to make ends meet. I just don't have the money. What now? I would like to sell House211 in the near future but I won't proceed until my niece's name is no longer on the deed.

Thanks in advance for your advice!
