Default Is Landlord Required to Provide a Mailbox

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: California (Sacramento)

My apartment is located in a building with two residential and two commercial units. When I moved in, my landlord told me that the mail would be delivered through a common door slot in the front of the building. I live in the back of the building. Both residential units receive mail through the door slot. The mail is dropped into a hallway that is accessible to the public since that hallway leads to a dressing room for one of the commercial units.

Last week, a box of checks and several other pieces of very personal mail with medical information were stolen from the hallway. Someone then charged hundreds of dollars to my checking account. They made purchases on Amazon and they wrote and cashed a physical check. Thankfully, my bank reversed the charges.

Several weeks ago, I asked my landlord for a private mailbox because this is exactly what I didn't want to happen. I was told to provide any ideas for what sort of mailbox. Then the theft happened. I told the landlord that I don't care what kind of mailbox or where in the building it is, but I want one ASAP. I was told that it would be looked into next week and that previous attempts to install a mailbox for the unit "took forever" which is why one was never installed.

Is there a law that I can cite that requires landlords to provide a locked mailbox for rental units? Can I ask my landlord to pay for a P.O. box?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
