I live in a 4BR townhouse in VA & the current 3 residents signed the lease (12 month) in May 2006 and the 4th roommate "Jill", who moved in shortly after is on an addendum to the lease. On September 13th Jill came home one evening and began moving her belongings out and by the following evening she was gone. We were never given any notice, nor was the landlord, on her wanting to move out. The following day we received a letter from her father (she is 19) giving us her 30 day notice, as of September 15th. We never received any rent for October or anything for September's bills. Even after several attempts to collect. We have been actively looking for a roommate, posting ads on various web-sites as well as different locations to no avail. Our lease is up in 6 months and we feel most people do not want to live in a place for only 6 months, so we are all stuckand paying her portion of the rent has become increasingly frustrating! We are going to file with the small claims court but my question is can we sue her for the remainder of her portion of the rent (from October 2006-May 2007)? Or just for the 15 days in October and September's bills??
