    Default To Catch a Predator

My question involves child abuse or neglect in the State of: (All States Featured in the show: Jersey, FL, Tx, Cali)

How is it that the evidence collected against the suspects in this show is permissible? The "Chat logs" are handed over to police by by a private vigilante group. now I mean, the video of them at the house talking to the girls (or boys) saying "I'm going to blank your blank" is pretty damming, but for some cases the chat logs and the fact that the guys showed up is all they have. Seems they could have a solid defense saying that the chat logs could have been completely fabricated.

Can anyone explain why this is not the case?

P.S. I apologize for my scattered thoughts, I'm doing 10 things at once, one of which is watching "To Catch a Predator".

well, they have a right to attempt that in the following processes.

if you notice, the interviewer also has the suspect confirm much of what the charges are based on

Since these traps are often well-prepared, and done in conjunction with experts, I suspect that the IPs are being logged as are all the messages so that they are preserved as evidence.

As jk mentioned, the defendant can argue anything he wants ... but, if they were fabricated, why was he there with flowers trying to hook up with a 13 year old girl? Or, is he going to argue that he was told it as a bored 42 year old housewife and that the ages and details were fabricated? Good luck with that.

One can certainly argue the guy who showed up at the teens house, entered and assumed the role of seducer was only circumstantially connected by fate to person in his house who contacted the teen on the internet. I think the odds of a Sasquatch showing up at my house for Thanksgiving dinner is higher.
