My question involves a landlord/tenant question in: Kansas

Me and my son recently moved back in with my mother, its her lease. last night i woke up to the smell of smoke, which the firefighters say was very lucky as alot of time people dont due to carbon monoxide. But i got up and looked in the living room to find a black spot in the cieling that was hot and a little smoke was coming down though a little hole. I woke everyone up in a panic and called 911. They arrived shortly and knocked the area in the ceiling down revealing a small fire and smoldering wooden joists. luckily we caught it in time before it spread. Im no electrician but after they were done spraying one of the fireman showed me area in the attic that caused it which was faulty wiring. They had an extension cord up there to use for several outlets in the home which i was told is a temporary solution but should not have remained and is not up to code. There also were not any smoke detectors in the house. which we never noticed before, but the fireman says he shouldnt have been able to sell a house without smoke detectors (she found it on craigslist) Red cross put us up in a hotel for 3 days but after that we will have no where to live. The landlords response was that we can purchase the house for $60 k which its not worth and she doesnt have the credit required anyways. and my mom never wanted to buy a house, or he would give us a good recommendations for another landlord. So basically after these three days we will be homeless. Im not a sue happy type of person and we did not have renters insurance but none our personal belongings were really damaged . i know he has insurance for the home which is why he will be trying to sell now (btw he had previously told her 40k but now is raising it by 20 thousand just because its up to code??) He says it ill be a couple of months before the wiring is corrected and power restored. Is there anything we can do legally? If i didnt happen to wake up the house would have burn down and we all probably would have been killed. it just doesn't seem right to put us out like that it is freezing cold here right now and i have a 3 year old son full time (is mothers not around too much) with no where to live all because of his negligence. We just need some answers. Please!
