Default Bought Used Car, Broke Down After 3 Starts

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Oregon

I bought a used car from a private dealership on Saturday (11/9/13). I told them I needed an affordable car that was good on miles and that I had an hour commute to and from work. They showed me a 1995 Mercury Tracer which started immediately and drove fine. I was told there was nothing wrong with the car and that it was well taken care of by the previous owner. I bought the car "As Is" and was able to drive it home.

When at home I realized the brake likes weren't working and was able to drive it to a nearby autozone to buy new lights. Today (11/12/13) I drove it back into town and it broke down on the way back home and will no longer start.

Is there anything I can do? I've waiting for contact from a few "auto fraud" lawyers in town.

Seriously, you bought an 18 year old car. Unless you were given a warranty it appears you are on your own. Why won't it start?

When you're poor you don't have many choices. With the budget I have it's going to be old. I don't know why it won't start, my guess is it's the alternator.

    Wouldn't I be protected under http://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/646.608?

You indicated it ran fine when you took it. There does not appear to be anything deceptive about a car that old breaking down.

I've barely had a chance to drive it, there can't be 50 miles on it since its been bought. I was told it was in good condition and was not told of any defects or problems with the car. It broke down third time I turned it on, that's not deceptive?

To make an argument something was deceptive, you need to determine what is wrong with it and come back. The dealer might look at it and possibly repair it for free if you paid enough for it.

If you did not have a mechanic check out an 18 year old car it's a case of buyer beware. I'm sure the dealer didn't have a clue about the mechanical condition of a car that they were going to sell presumably cheap, because of it's age. Old electronics fail without warning all the time on older cars.
