My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: TEXAS

I was ticketed for improper lane change, failure to signal after leaving an Air Force Installation. My concern is that I don't believe I ever changed lanes. The Air Force gate forced me to exit the installation in the right hand lane of a 4-lane (2 lanes per side) road. I stayed in the right hand lane for the next mile until the right hand lane gradually widened and ultimately split into a right turn only lane and a lane continuing straight. When I approached the portion of the lane that gradually widened I followed the curb and ultimately ended up in the right turn only lane. I am not sure what the requirement is to signal when a lane splits. When a turn lane is made available to a driver it is usually obvious but not at this location. To be honest, I am not sure if this is where the incident occured because the officer never fully explained the violation. He only said that he was citing me for improper lane change, failure to signal. After driving that same stretch of road several time over, I am speculating that the location I am refering to is the location of the violation. The only other place it could have possibly been was turning onto the frontage road. Again, that was never specified. I never asked because I was in shock, didn't want to appear confrontational, and the stop occured quickly.

Is there an argument to be made for not signaling for lanes that gradually widen and then split? Is this even considered a lane change? Is there an argument to be made for the officer not specifying exactly where the incident occured? The traffic stop was so quick. I was asked for my license and insurance; he never took my insurance card. He had me sign an electronic hand held device. He went back to his car and in a very short time frame (2 min) he was back with my ticket. He discussed cell phone usage in a school zone as a nother issue, but only cited me for the lane change. As I started to read the ticket, he went back to his car and left. I never had a chance to ask questions. I have never received a ticket before.
