My question involves criminal law for the state of: Texas
Today, I got caught shoplifting a $58 pair of jeans at kohl's, i now know how stupid it was and it wasn't worth the looks on my parents' faces, but they have no real proof that I actually stole it except a bunch of cameras following my movements, and finding a pair of jeans in my backpack, there were no tags on it even when i found them although it looked new. I was told that i would get a letter in the mail with a fine from Kohl's and because of the actual price of the merchandise they took down my information and called a cop. I'm only sixteen and I'm in college, they said i might get detained depending on the officer, when he came in he handcuffed me without reading me my rights. He took me to the station, took my fingerprints and mugshot, then gave me a court date and let me go. I had no intentions of stealing it when it walked in, and i am truly sorry. I am wondering what i should say in court, i have another vivid explanation as to how the jeans got in my backpack but i don't know if i should use it in court. Do i need a lawyer for this or can i handle it alone with my parents? If i fail, what could be the worst punishment? and would it still be on my record even after i turn 21?
