My question involves civil rights in the State of: New Jersey
A township tax assessor entered my house without my permission. Can I sue him for trespassing? Thanks.
My parents who do not understand English were visiting me and were at home alone that day. They opened the door as they thought the guy came to check our water meter. After entering our house, the assessor started to take pictures which intimidated my parents, but my parents didn't know how to stop this guy and they didn't want to create body conflicts, so they just followed him from room to room to make sure he wouldn't do anything worse. After the assessor left, my parents called me right away. The guy left a door tag without his name on it, just the contact of the office of tax. He did not notify either me or my husband about his visit. We felt very annoyed about this guy's behavior. My husband dealt with this tax assessor before, so this guy should know my parents are not the home owner. How can he do all these without notifying me or my husband beforehand? BTW, the tax office our phone number.
