Default Is an Adult Child Responsible for a Deceased Parent's Debts

My Father-in-law died. My wife has no connections to him. He left a life policy he left to my wife, that won't cover his funeral. He left no will. He has nothing of value. We are paying for his funeral. Will his daughter, my wife, be liable for his outstanding bills, like car insurance, rent, etc.? He has a junk car, crap furniture in an apartment. We are just thinking of telling the apartment owner that he died and let them take care of his stuff. Are we responsible for anything of his liabilities?? We live in Massachusetts.

as long as she walks away from the entire estate, she incurs no liability either direct or implied.

And just to be clear, the life insurance is NOT part of the estate.
