Default Am I Responsible for Child Support if My Ex Changes My Son's Name

My question involves name change laws in the State of: California

My son is 17. I have not seen or spoken to him for over 6 years (ex moved and would not let me see him) now I have received a phone call from son asking that I ok him changing his name so his diploma will reflect the mom's boyfriend's last name.

Frankly, at this point it is a mute subject so why fight it - but my question is - if I ok this where does that leave my responsibility for child support? they are not wanting to do a formal adoption - just change his name.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Your child's name has no relevance to your obligation to support your child.

    I agree with this response.

However, I will also add that if its really mom's boyfriend's last name that the child wants to use, rather than mom's husband's, I would strongly recommend saying no for the child's sake. If mom and the boyfriend do not stay together permanently, the last thing the child is going to want is to have her boyfriend's last name.

It leaves your responsibility for support in the same position it is in now and please don't be so low as to withhold your consent as a bargaining chip. If that man has been playing daddy in your absence because you failed to act, then maybe your son sees him as his father for good reason. Those titles are usually saved for those who have done the work and earned them.

The son is 17, and dad hasn't spoken to him since he was 11 - if there's to be any hope for a future relationship, saying "No" seems likely to significantly reduce the chance. If the son decides he wants a different surname in the future, he can change his name again.
