Default Licence Suspended Due to Unpaid Ticket, Licence Also Expired

My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: Connecticut

So here's the back story. I was stopped last September and was cited for not having a valid registration (which was resolved a few weeks after). I will fess up and say I completely forgot to pay the $117 fine for not having a valid registration and never received a court summons. So time passed; In February I registered a vehicle in my name with no issues. In April I registered yet another vehicle in my name no issues. So May 6th comes along, which is the date that my license expired. So I went to the DMV and was told my license was suspended as of November of last year!!! I registered 2 vehicles after November and not once was flagged for a suspended license.

I'm lucky enough to be in walking distance of my job so the need to drive isn't high. But with a new job that requires transportation, I'm going to need this resolved.

I spoke with the DMV and they said I would have to first pay the ticket ($117 + $60 to reopen the case at the court house), then send in $175 to the DMV to reinstate my expired license. Once reinstated, I will have to pay my license renewal fee plus the fee for having it expire.

What are my options? Money is very tight at the moment and to dish out between $400-450 is not something I can do immediately. I wish I knew my license was expired earlier.

    Thanks for any help.

    -Felix

Are you fessing up to the same violation or a different one in addition to the September violation? Also, I am not clear on how you would forget about one citation if you had not received a summons...

If you're implying that you never received notice when you missed payment, then it is possible that the address on your license or the address on the citation that was originally issued is different than your current address. This is the typical reason why people may not receive a reminder notice or one issued for a late fee.

That does not require a check of whether your license is suspended or not.

    Ditto as above.

    Double Ditto to the above.

There really isn't much that anyone can do or say to offer any help. If payment is required to re-open the case, then that must happen as step one. From the court's stand point, and regardless of the underlying circumstances, you defaulted on paying a citation. This might be the reason why payment is required to get the matter open and rescheduled.

Same thing with the DMV... Any services that they offer require timely and immediate payment. And looking on the bright side of things and even though you stated you do not drive often, this could have been much worse had you been pulled over and cited for driving while suspended.

Needles to say, you don't have to do it all in one day. Split it over a few weeks time and the bite might feel a little more manageable.

    Good luck!

    Sorry, you have no options.

You blew by not paying the original fine.

Find the money and pay up.

Otherwise this is only going to get worse.

Once your insurance company gets wind of the suspension your policy could be cancelled and drive you up into a high risk rate class, if it isn't already happening.

Your only option is to fork over the cash.

Oh wait, your other option is to keep hoofing it.
