Default Charged for Defacing Property With Graffiti

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California-L.A. County

i have just been charged with a 594(a)(1)pc, which in short is a vandalism via graffiti charge (i have provided the link below for details).
    http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/di...&file=594-625c

i vandalized a university campus using spray paint. i have a clean record and this is my first offense. i am currently in the process of awaiting my court date and am unsure of what my sentence will be.

i would like to ask a few questions regarding my current situation:

    1. what is my most likely sentence?
    2. will i need a lawyer? if so, what will be the approximate cost?
    3. is it possible to get my charge expunged?
    4. i am in the process of becoming a high school science teacher (which currently happens to be a high demand job in L.A. county). how will this affect my employment prospects? if i get an expungement, will it clear my criminal record if school districts or any future employees do a background check?

thank you very much for your time.

I really do not think a school district would want to hire a teacher who sprays graffiti, rather than catches the students who do. It shows a decided lack of the maturity level needed to be a teacher. Especially one who would need to be entrusted with chemicals. Are you planning on your own TV show down the road?

I do suggest you invest in a good criminal attorney. While the charge may not be a major crime, it is a crime that will haunt you for the rest of your life. I also suggest you think about a different career path.

Consult a criminal lawyer and discuss the possibility of a deferral. If you want to know what lawyers charge, call some offices and ask for prices. Your college may have a student legal services office that can assist with referrals.

Most LIKELY will be probation for two to three years (with search and seizure conditions), community service, fines and restitution.

    2. will i need a lawyer? if so, what will be the approximate cost?
Yes. If you have the means to pay for one it will likely run you between $1,500 and $3,000 depending on how much has to be done. If you plan to go to trial, you can expect a low end of $5,000.

    3. is it possible to get my charge expunged?
Someday, perhaps. When you have cleared probation, don't serve time, and no one objects in a few years, sure.

    4. i am in the process of becoming a high school science teacher (which currently happens to be a high demand job in L.A. county). how will this affect my employment prospects? if i get an expungement, will it clear my criminal record if school districts or any future employees do a background check?
If convicted and not sentenced to jail time, expungement still won't even be possible for a few years. Until then, this is likely to be a job killer. You committed a crime ... on an educational campus! Not to mention the fact that this shows a huge lack of maturity! It hardly qualifies you as a role model for high school students when you have behaved like a middle schooler. Such activity is unbecoming a teacher.

You might want to set your sights a little lower for the time being and try to earn your way back to a position of responsibility by demonstrating a solid work ethic, and adult and responsible behavior.

What is the dollar value of the damage? If over $400 this could be charged as a felony.
