My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Indiana
I recently gave notice to my employer of 4 1/2 years after accepting another job offer. On the day of the job offer, I had 2 other interviews and only accepted the "known" offer with company A with the intention of continuing forward with a second interview with company B. When they (company B) called to do my reference checks, the administrator with my current employer informed them I had already given notice and accepted employment with another company (company A). Company B is my first preference but I didn't want to put all of my eggs in one basket and not move forward with a "known" opportunity with company A if company B didn't end up offering me a position. Is this legal on the part of my present employer? Or just unethical? Now company B is questioning if I would leave their company during orientation if I were offered a better position again. I explained the above and they have said they will continue to move forward but I feel it has tarnished my reputation already.
