Default How Does a Student Loan Default Affect a Spouse's Finances and Credit

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Nebraska

My grandson's wife left him and moved to NE. Her aunt and uncle cosigned student loans. My grandson found out about this after the fact, so his name is not on anything. She has now defaulted on loans and has moved back to TN to try to work out their marriage. Their joint IRS refund was taken for repayment. I'm concerned about the effect this could have on my grandson. Can anyone tell me what he needs to be concerned about, whether they remain married or divorce?

It won't effect his credit, but he should not maintain any joint accounts with her, own any major assets with her, and he should have filed an injured spouse form when he found out that the joint tax refund was being seized.

Thank you. I'll suggest he look into the injured spouse possibility.
