My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: New York
I rented a room in a shared apartment 9 years ago. At the time of my moving in, I paid security deposit and last months rent to prior tenant. I moved out a year later, charging the tenant after me security deposit and last months rent. Now i've been contacted by the tenant that took over the apartment after me, saying that I charged last months rent, but the landlord says she did not charge this to the original tenant (and that I thus overcharged the current tenant) and saying I now owe the current tenant the last months rent. All accounts and any paper trail proving I paid the tenant before me the last months rent charge cannot be accessed. What are my options, since no one can show me proof that I definitely owe this to the current tenant, but I cannot prove definitively at this point (my closed bank account only help 7 years of account history) that I did indeed pay the prior tenant the same amount that I charged?
