Default Never Knew I Had A Misdemeanor Conviction - What Do I Do?

Well I've never knew I had a misdemeanor on my record but apparently I had one 10 years ago when I received a ticket for playing my car stereo for a friend. To make a long story short his uncle decided to give me a ticket for ( small town officer) noise ordinance. Well apparently any oridnace violation in NC is a misdemeanor . Is it worth looking to expunge this? I was made aware of it by a job I was applying for and was told I did have a record but it wasn't a problem I just need to put it on an application. I can't believe I have a record for paying a $50 fine when a friends uncle was trying to teach us a lesson.

Is it worth trying to get it expunged? And why would this not fall under the class of a traffic misdemeanor?

I dont think your being totally honest with us. The "ticket" you mention is an infraction! The midemeanor comes from not going to court would be my guess! You ignored court date and felt it was forgotten well now its bit you in the butt!

Sorry panther but that's not true. I paid the fine like the officer told me (like a normal traffic ticket). When I found this out and dug around it appears that the law states something along the lines of an ordinance violation is a misdemeanor violation. I found this info on I believe NC State University's website as more college students were entering school with misdemeanors on their records because of this. So I simply checked the box on the back and paid it like what I thought was a normal traffic ticket.

To be more exact here's where my info came from

    http://www.ncsu.edu/stud_affairs/leg...affectstud.htm

    http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/EnactedL...4/GS_14-4.html

Guess that's what I get for being a naive 18 year old but I guess from the looks of it I'm not the only one.

Here's information on North Carolina expungement.

The noise ordinance violation you describe isn't directly related to the operation of a car, and you were probably cited under the same ordinance they would have applied if you had your stereo on to loudly in your apartment.

Thanks for the info aaron guess my real question is it worth bothering to go through the process of having it expunged for something that is minor. It's definitely a ordinance related to car stereo this officer was just applying a newly approved town ordinance. It's been over 12 years and it's never effected anything it just bugs me that I found out I had a misdemeanor.

If it were me, I would petition for an expungement just as a matter of principle. But I have long been reluctant to assume that others should do as I would do, as although I have managed to go my entire life without getting arrested... some people have a hard time getting through a week or a month without an encounter with the police. (I'm not putting you into that category - I'm just expressing why I now take the approach that it's a choice for the individual to make.)
