Default Battery Cable Shorted Out After Repair

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Ohio

I paid $200 to have my battery cable replaced. A week after my wife was driving and the cable they replace shorted out and melted through my air filter box and scorched my air filter. I ended up having my father in law fix the short wire. From the short it killed my alternator and TCM (the computer that controls shifting in the transmission.) I replace the alternator from a junk yard one for $35. The tcm will cost me $200 for the part. I took the car back to the guy who did the work and all he tried to do was clear the check engine light which didnt work. I was wondering if i can sue him for my money back from the repair and the new parts i have to buy?

Is this a certified repair shop or a backyard mechanic? What proof do you have the issue was negligence on their part?

Do you have a warranty for the work performed? If so, you can start from there. If they are not willing to comply with the warranty or you don't have one, then yes you can sue to get your money back if you can show how the performed job led to damages, how the mechanic was aware or should have been aware of this, and what should have been done to avoid the damage.
