I'll betcha they can hold them until the parents show up.

can? Sure. Will; I doubt it.
The state of MI simply has no power to do anything to a 17 yo. If another state steps in, it would have to be to enforce the laws of their own state. That would mean that they would have to open a case in their state to enforce their laws. Money spent to deal with a kid that doesn't even live in their state. That would mean that any ongoing punishment would have to be paid for by that state as well.
In today's world, I just don't see anybody doing anything.
I still maintain that the parents, with or without the police, can drag their 17 year old back home once that 17 year old crosses out of Michigan.
MI's odd law aside, the child is NOT 17 now. If the 16 year old leaves, mom and dad can enter the child as a runaway even under MI state law.
And, as a runaway, if located in another state and the child is confirmed as a runaway, the finding agency MUST act to detain the child turning the child over to whatever state/local agency might be responsible. In some states it could be a criminal offense NOT to take custody of said child ... not to mention the civil liability that would apply if the law enforcement officer failed to take the appropriate action. The law is very clear in my state, and if the 17 year old ran away to my state and was taken in for a criminal or status offense, we could NOT simply release him onto the streets - he would be held until provided for, or placed into foster care until of legal age.
I'd like to ask Original Poster a few questions:
(1) Do you think your parents are going to be happy to discover you went on this vacation despite their saying "No".
(2) Are you prepared for however they respond? I wonder if they can file a runaway report, then have you placed in Juvenile Detention? Or not allow you back home? Or ground you until the day you are 18 or graduate and order you to move out then?
