Default Criminal History and Becoming a Police Officer

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
I have been arrested and convicted for misdemeanor exhibiting a deadly weapon not self defense and entering a non commercial dwelling. This happened when a bum kidded my car and I got out with a large knife. This was when I was 19 years old. Is there any way that I can still become a police officer if I have an AS degree and have never been in any other trouble. My dads best friend also happens to be the police chief in my town. Will this help at all? Thanks for info

First of all, don't look to Dad's friend to offer any help in your venture. He'd be very smart to distance himself from even the appearance of impropriety.

Your arrest and conviction will most likely preclude you from becoming a LEO.

Even being such a high ranking officer you don't believe he can help at all? I feel he would be willing to put himself in that position just because him and my father have been best friends since they where kids

It would not be a risk worth taking for this man to stake his reputation in this manner.

    Any hope at all?

I made a few stupid decisions but I'm not a criminal and don't plan on ever being arrested again, do you really think it would be such a great risk for him to take, seeing as he has been an officer in this town for over 25 years

But you ARE a criminal. Go seek gainful employment elsewhere - if your can.

Your Dad's friend would be placing HIS career in jeopardy in hiring you.

Not to mention, if you get a job because of connections - people will be watching you really close and waiting for you to make the slightest mistake.

Trust me, get a position on your own merit, not because you know someone. Talk to your local police academy and see if you can even be admitted.

I am...stunned...at your thinking here. To be charitable about it. Do you honestly believe that you are just that incredible, that this man should put his entire career and livelihood on the line for you? What makes you so vitally important to the police department, that he should run the risk of ruining his rep and losing his job if he sticks his neck out for you and you bugger up the works?

No, kiddo, that's not how the Real World works, especially not in law enforcement.

Local jurisdiction's rules govern whether or not your record will disqualify you. You need to discuss your options with both your local police academy and your PD. Given that your conviction involved you threatening someone with a large knife (who DOES that??), you may be found to be temperamentally unfit and not to be trusted with a deadly weapon at all.

Quite arrogant and he just didn't get it. Very sad and yet very typical our much of our youth today. I call it the whatcanyoudoforme syndrome.

Seriously. Apply at the Police Academy. See if you can get in on your own merit.

    If not...find something else.
