Default Travel to Canada and Back After Entering the U.S. on the Visa Waiver Program

    Hey all,

    Quick question:

I have a business associate coming into the US for a short visit. He's Estonian so he'll be coming in under the VWP.

While he's here we'd also like to go up to Canada to visit another customer there.

I understand that waiver visitors are allowed short trips into Canada so long as they re-enter before the 90-day waiver expiration. We will, however, be crossing the border both ways by car at Sweet Grass, MT where the CBP people probably don't see a whole lot of waiver visitors from Estonia flopping back and forth across the border. I suspect that we're going to stand out from the crowd just a bit.

Does anybody have any suggestions for smoothing the process on the way back into the US? I assume that CBP's technology is now to the point where they can access his ESTA/waiver status without problem - even in a spot like Sweet Grass that's 2,000 miles from the nearest civilization. I just don't want to stare at the walls in Sweet Grass for ten hours or, god forbid, end up having him denied re-entry over some minor issue.

Any suggestions or pointers on how to make this one quick and easy?

    Thanks!
    XJ.

    Read this.
Quote Quoting Trips to Canada, Mexico, or nearby Islands
If you are admitted to the United States under the VWP, you may take a short trip to Canada, Mexico, or a nearby island and generally be readmitted to the United States under the VWP for the remainder of the original 90 days granted upon your initial arrival in the United States. Therefore, the length of time of your total stay, including the short trip, must be 90 days or less. See the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) website.

Citizens of VWP countries who reside in Mexico, Canada, or a nearby island are generally exempted from the requirement to show onward travel to another country * when entering the United States. Learn more at the CBP website.

Thanks. As I noted in my original post, I understand what the rule is.

What I'm looking for is more practical advice on smoothing over the actual crossing from people who have done it, especially at places like Sweet Grass that don't see a lot of tourist traffic.

Do they normally handle it out in the drive-through or should we expect to stop and go in inside? Will my friend have to go through US-VISIT fingerprint process again? Any particular documentation that they usually ask for? That kind of thing.

Just looking for advice on getting through easy from people who have done it so we don't have to sit there for hours. I suspect that this is not a common situation at a commerce crossing like Sweet Grass - he's likely to be the first Estonia they've ever seen - and I just want to make sure we're ready for whatever they might throw at us.

Sorry if that wasn't entirely clear in my original post. Thanks for your response, though. If anybody out there has actually gone through this and would like to share their experience I would be most grateful.

    Cheers,
    XJ.
